Learning About Typeface

Ever since I learned about typeface and the design of fonts, I was hooked. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons I make a podcast about boring things… For whatever reason, I’m fascinated with the origin and design of most things. The thing that stood out to me the most in the article is that, originally, italics was a different typeface from bold. Even 12-point is a different typeface from 13-point. I take for granted the modern technology we have with text editors that makes changing things like the point size so trivial. Moving physical type would take forever! I can only imagine blog posts then came out quarterly…

The art and craft of designing typefaces is called type design. Designers of typefaces are called type designers and are often employed by type foundries. In digital typography, type designers are sometimes also called font developers or font designers.
